After a productive weekend with some of the best recruits in the country on campus, the University of California netted their first commitment for the class of 2011.

Lamar (Houston, TX) High School athlete Darren Ervin had been talking with Cal about an offer and everything was firmed up on his visit to Cal on their Elite Junior Day on Saturday.

"I was able to sit down with the Cal coaches and we talked about what I was looking for in a school," said Ervin.  "They have everything I like.  It's a great area, a great program and their academics are some of the best around.  I'm thinking about studying engineering and they're the #1 engineering program in the country.

"My dad and I had a chance to come in early, on Thursday, so we had a great chance to take everything in, to see the campus, the area, the stadium, the dorms and everything. I love it all.

"I love how the stadium's built into the hills and you can stand at the top of Memorial and see the whole bay and San Francisco.  Where else are you going to see something like that?  It's quite a bit different than Houston."

Ervin did it all for Lamar this last year, earning 5a all-district honors starting at quarterback and playing some receiver before making a switch to running back during the year when they lost their starter there.

He's coming in to Cal as an "athlete," as a player that could fit in at any number of positions and will likely find his future position after his senior season or when the best fit becomes apparent when he's in camp in 2011.

Stay tuned for additional follow-up on this weekend's visits soon to come.
