BERKELEY - Cal junior wide receiver Keenan Allen added again to his long list of preseason honors on Thursday when he was named a second-team preseason All-American by Sports Illustrated. Allen has been Cal's most decorated player prior to the 2012 season.
Allen has earned nearly unanimous preseason All-American accolades and is on several national watch lists including the Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Player of the Year given annually to the nation's top college football player of the year; the Biletnikoff Award for the best receiver; and the Paul Hornung Award for the most versatile player.
Allen caught 98 passes for 1,343 receiving yards and six touchdown catches in 2011, with the receptions and receiving yards both ranking second on Cal's all-time single season lists behind school record holders Dameane Douglas (100 receptions in 1998) and Geoff McArthur (1,504 receiving yards in 2003). He returns the fourth-highest per-game averages from 2011 of all active Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) players for both receptions (7.54) and receiving yards (103.31).
Allen has career totals of 144 receptions, 1,833 receiving yards and 11 touchdown catches in two seasons at Cal. His 144 career receptions are only 58 shy of all-time school leader Geoff McArthur's career total of 202 from 2000-04, while he will start the 2012 season 1,355 receiving yards short of McArthur's career total of 3,188.
