The University of California once again waded into the waters of talent-rich Texas to mine another gem in Dallas Christian offensive lineman Chris Adcock, who gave the Bears a verbal commitment this week.
It didn't take long for the big Dallas lineman to solidify the decision he'd started to make after last weekend's outstanding visit to Cal's Junior Day and spring scrimmage and after consulting with his family and coaches, followed through on what became an easy decision.
"My trip went really well and I was offered by Cal when I was out there," said Adcock. "Afterwards, I went to Coach Tedford's office and I got the offer from him. We were really impressed by Cal -everything about it."
Adcock is an excellent student, boasting a 4.0 grade point average at Dallas Christian.
"Cal's academics played a big role in my decision," said Adcock. "I'm planning on studying pre-med or engineering and Cal's a top school in both.
"At Cal, I can get a great education, great football and play in the Pac 10.
"The coaches are great quality coaches and people. They really took an interest in me and made me and my family feel at home. Coach Tedford really knew my film and discussed several specific plays from different parts of my film. Also, Cal has a great campus environment and tradition and I have lots of extended family in the area. My mom is from Merced and my dad is from Vacaville and he played football and went to med school at UC Davis. At Cal, I get a chance to live in California with the mountains, ocean, weather and San Francisco all nearby.
"Cal was first to step up and make me an offer. Just an overall great fit and great opportunity."
As was the case with yesterday's offensive line commit, Bishop Gorman's Geoff Gibson, new Cal offensive line coach Steve Marshall took the lead in Adcock's recruitment.
While previous offensive line coach Jim Michalczik was accomplished and well-liked in his seven years at Cal, it appears that Marshall is raising the stakes when it comes to Cal's recruiting game, establishing and building good relationships with the many high-profile linemen the Bears are pursuing this recruiting season.
"Coach Marshall has been my main recruiter," said Adcock. "He's a great guy and he really knows what he's talking about."
Said ESPN/Scouts Inc's Bill Conley of Adcock:
Adcock is a prototype offensive guard that has a great combination of strength and technical skills. He is a fierce hitter with his hands in both the run and pass game. Dominates defensive linemen that try to play base technique against him; road-grades them off the line of scrimmage. He's very solid pass protector that kicks back off the line of scrimmage and shows patience waiting for the pass rusher to come to him. Adcock rarely gets over-extended and works hard to finish the play.
Dallas Christian won the TAPPS (Texas Association of Private Parochial Schools) Div. 2 4A state championships last year, with Adcock playing a pivotal role. Adcock was also named all-state and all-district on the year, as well.
Ranked in the ESPN Top 150 watch list, the 6-3/301 Adcock, who's being recruited at offensive guard and center at Cal shows tremendous promise.
Kansas State, Arkansas, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Texas A&M and TCU are all some of the schools recruiting Adcock that he's visited in recent weeks, though none had yet pulled the trigger with an offer.
Once again, Cal's new philosophy of early scouting and early offers has paid off in a big way for the Bears.
