Easily the biggest member of the Cal Bear contingent at the Semper Fi All-American Bowl was Mission Viejo offensive tackle Erik Bunte. Unfortunately for the 6-7/315 Bunte, he was also the least active, sitting out this week's practice and game with a foot injury sustained playing basketball recently during his offseason training program.
"I was getting a little bored in my training so I decided to mix it up and mix in some basketball and got dinged up. Who figured a big guy like me might get hurt playing basketball? Real smart," said Bunte, with a laugh."
Though he wasn't able to play, Bunte clearly enjoyed bonding with his teammates and was active in spreading the Golden Bear gospel all week.
"One of his teammates on the West squad was Cal commit Jared Goff, Marin Catholic quarterback.
"There's a lot of Cal guys here this week," said Bunte. "It's been fun getting to meet them all, especially Goff. He's a good man.
"I've been able to watch him a lot this week. He's an impressive player and I'm sure he'll mature greatly at Cal.
"The first time I met him, he had a big smile on his face and couldn't wait for me to block for him."
