After years of defensive struggles, the progress made on the defensive side of the ball continues to be acknowledged, as senior safety Stefan McClure became the second straight Cal player to be named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the week following last week's selection of senior defensive end Kyle Kragen.
The 5th-year senior has come back strong from two straight seasons of knee surgeries to lead the Cal defense in 2015, helping the Bears to a 5-0 start.
McClure was instrumental in the Bears' 34-28 victory over Washington State Saturday, with a 45-yard fumble return for a touchdown after a WSU fake punt attempt, his first career sack and six tackles registered on the day.
McClure's touchdown was pivitol in the Cal win, coming with the Bears trailing by eight in the 3rd quarter, narrowing the gap to one. McClure's sack was also instrumental from preventing a Cougar field goal, pushing WSU back to the 40 before the field goal was missed.
McClure, who has started all five games this season, is third on the team with 24 tackles, including two tackles for loss, one sack, one fumble recovery returned for the touchdown and two pass breakups this season.
