BERKELEY – Adding another high-profile opponent to its future non-conference football schedules, California announced Thursday that it will play a two-game series with Mississippi, starting with a contest at Kabam Field at California Memorial Stadium on Sept. 16, 2017. The Golden Bears will visit Oxford, Mississippi, on Sept. 21, 2019.
As a result, Cal and Auburn have agreed to postpone their upcoming series for one year. The Bears and Tigers will meet at Auburn on Sept. 19, 2020, with the two schools playing in Berkeley on Sept. 18, 2021.
“Today's announcement of a home-and-home series with Ole Miss continues our philosophy of adding games that will be attractive to our fans and showcase Kabam Field at California Memorial Stadium, our campus and the entire Bay Area,” Director of Athletics Mike Williams said. “It also gives our fans the opportunity to experience some of the best college football traditions from around the country. We are seeing a trend of more schools scheduling similar high-profile games and, under head coach Sonny Dykes, we are building a football program that will be successful at the highest level of college football.”
Cal has not previously faced Ole Miss or Auburn.
The Rebels finished 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the SEC last year. They reached as high as No. 3 in the AP Top 25 after a 7-0 start and earned a berth to the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, where they lost to TCU, another future Cal opponent. The Bears’ last game against a team from the SEC resulted in a 45-31 victory over Tennessee in Berkeley in 2007.
Among other non-conference opponents on Cal’s upcoming schedules are Texas and San Diego State, both for the 2015 and 2016 campaigns. This coming fall, San Diego State will travel to Berkeley Sept. 12, while the Bears visit Texas Sept. 19. In 2016, the Longhorns make their first trip to Berkeley since 1969 (Sept. 17) and the Bears take on the Aztecs in San Diego (Sept. 10). Cal will also open with Grambling State in 2015 (Sept. 5).
In addition, Cal begins a two-game series with North Carolina in 2017 (at UNC Sept. 2, 2017; at Cal Sept. 1, 2018) and starts a series with TCU in 2020 (at Cal Sept. 5, 2020; at TCU Sept. 11, 2021).
