I Know Who Bruce Jenkins Spoke To Before the Game - 10-01-2012, 01:44 PM

The individual Bruce spoke to before the game is a very close family friend and the most wired-in alum I have ever met. I was actually at the same tailgate (as I have been for the past 7 years).

Out of respect for his wishes, I will not use his name here; I will only reiterate what Bruce inferred from his conversation....Tedford is almost certainly on his way out at the end of the year, but more likely before the season ends.

First off - as a response to those who categorize "wealthy alums" as Thurston Howell III blowhards...don't let the facts interfere with your unfounded generalizations.

The alum in question has done more for CAL Athletics (football, basketball, baseball) for the past 3-4 decades than probably everyone here put together. It's easy to write a big check (if you have it), it takes a lot more to put in the time (man or woman hours) to generate this kind of support for the program.

He and his circle of friends were widely influential in the Save CAL Baseball campaign, and has attended home and away games for all the major sports for decades.

He bleeds Blue & Gold and is a fierce supporter of all things CAL. I have debated him re: Tedford since 2007 (the Longshore/Riley debacle) and he has always had JT's back. But it seems he has crossed the point of no return.

Therefore, if he believes Tedford must go, it's highly likely that opinion is shared by his cohorts....and that spells the end of the Tedford era.

Part II - After the game, I spoke with another mega donor, who is (if possible) even more plugged in than the alum Jenkins spoke to.

Again, I will protect their identity, but here is the substance of what I learned:

1. The buyout money is not as big an obstacle as everyone here thinks. Far more deadly is the damage a losing program will do to the long term financing of the athletic dept. Unsold ESP's etc. When I listed the buyout as a concern, this alum dismissed it with a wave of the hand, and indicated it would be taken care of.

2. This alum actually felt strongly that Tedford would NOT finish the season as head coach. A debacle in the UCLA or Big Game would likely result in a pink slip by the following Monday.

3. Mid-season firing was preferable to end-of-season, as it sends a strong signal to replacement candidates that we are SERIOUS about building a winning program, and puts us at the front of the line for the cream-of-the-crop candidates.

You can make of this what you will. Feel free to write it off as "Boston Market" information, only remember what you learned here if Sandy cuts her losses sooner rather than later.

Let the guessing game commence...

One of the Haas clan is my guess, although I don't know who else is a big donor (besides the Goldmans' recent big donation).

thanks for the info CG95. it's reassuring to hear that contrary to what many claim, that our biggest donors are NOT in fact complacent and okay with mediocre achievements--if you can even call it mediocre at this point.

the point about a mid-season canning is surprising, but i like that they see the importance in committing to a pursuing a winning program.

without disclosing anything you shouldn't, can you elaborate at all on whether or not there has been a shortlist made for a new HC and/or assistants?

Thank you for the info. I'm positive most on here are beyond appreciative of what our backers have done/are doing for the department (this situation is bigger than just football). Even if we don't always say the smartest things.

Things will end well.

Some people look at porn, Jim Schwartz watches Jahvid Best clips, but to me, this post is very arousing.

Not going to argue with a guy who can and does put his money (and time) where his mouth is. I get the ESP/whole AD angle...just find it a bit difficult to understand a mid-season firing. It would send a signal to alumni but I don't see a firing selling more ESP seats between the firing and next season...not in this economy.

Perhaps you guys can enlighten me, what does Cal gain by an early fire?

More time to salvage a recruiting class and to create some immediate buzz, potentially reversing the perception among recruits and fans that Cal is in decline.

I'm not sure if CalGrad95 and I are talking to the same person or people, but let's just say that I will back up what he is saying. Suffice to say that I have a relationship with a few of the biggest donors (possibly the biggest) and I'm hearing the same. I wasn't there Saturday (thank God) so I hadn't heard the rumblings of mid-season firings, but I will be shocked if Jeff Tedford is the coach on Christmas. I'm not sure a 7 game winning streak would save him at this point (maybe).

My guesses: Larry Baer or Stu Gordon.

I don't know anything - 10-01-2012, 02:04 PM

but I will be shocked by a mid-season firing unless there is a lot of team and coach infighting going on. It would just be so out of character for Cal to fire someone in the middle of the season for not winning enough. It wouldn't bother me but it would shock me.

No one is going to give you a #. But the buzz if it happened would be major. Otherwise you are left with recruits and their parents wondering what if?

More buzz + salvaging (possibly jump starting) recruiting could translate into more interest from a fan base timid of ESP purchases.

I am never going to call out a poster but..........

It would be UNFATHONABLE that Tedford would be canned mid-season. Folks, Charlie f'ing WEIS couldn't get fired mid-season at Notre F'ing DAME!!!

Slick Rick wasn't canned until AFTER the regular season!!!!

Mid-year firings happen:

A) in the NFL
B) In the South-Eastern Division of the NFL knows as the SEC
C) When there is some scandal unrelated to football

Either the post is "incorrect" or said alumni doesn't have a clue.

OP had the answer for you.

I don't know it would sell any more seats immediately, but could pretty quick, depending on team performance. And the team might immediately rally around the new coach, even a temporary one.

The other issue with considering a midseason firing is who will be available when. Sandy has a short list, but NFL playoffs and college bowl games can cloud that. A mid-season dismissal puts you at the head of the list time-wise, but if you want a currently employed coach you may have to wait until January anyway. It does send a message, though.
