Cal is in the top two in conference in every offensive category but numero uno in pitching by a significant margin. With all of the homeruns being hit in 2012, it's key that the Bear's dynamic duo has only yielded five: Jo Henderson (4) & Val Arioto (1)! Defense has moved up into a tie for 2nd place in fielding percentage. Freshman shortstop, Cheyenne Cordes, & freshman third sacker, Danielle Henderson, have only commited two errors each.

bottomline: Cal & ASU have comparable stats in most areas.

The conference-only stats are the most interesting to me. It shows similar competition levels. It also shows how the teams have been playing lately -- all the early season ups and downs are dropped out.

The top three home run hitters are Bears. Arioto has 5; Kostreba and D. Henderson have 4. Echavarria is tied for fourth.

Four of the top six slugging percentages are Bears: Arioto, Kostreba, Henderson and Echavarria.

Bears lead by a lot in hitting. They haven't cooled off against Pac-12 pitching.

Dallas Escobedo of ASU is coming on strong. She is second in ERA. She had some very bad outings early in the season, but has been more consistent in league play.

It's a small sample size (9 games for most teams) but it gives a good current sense of the teams.

One-third of the teams have had their bye weekend already so they have only played six games. Also, there are a few rainouts that are scheduled to be made up this week. Arizona plays Utah during the week and heads to Berkeley for a weekend series.

The opposite end of the stats from hitting is pitching. We're probably saying the same thing but the top 7 pitchers during conference play come from only three teams: Cal(2), Wash (3) & ASU (2). Cal has already beaten WA and doesn't face ASU to the final conference series at home. The four remaining opponents (Arizona, Oregon, UCLA & Oregon State) in between possess team ERAs between 4.10-6.00 runs per game. Stanford & Utah have the bottom two ERAs partially because they have endured the Bear's offense already... GO BEARS!

Looks like one voter switched Cal and Alabama this week despite Alabama losing 1 of 3 at home to LSU (who lost to Cal 14-3 in 5 innings on 2/19 in Las Vegas). Doesn't make much sense to me there, but Cal still gets 29 out of 30 #1 votes.

It's looking more and more as if it will come down to the ASU series for the conference title. Hopefully, the home field will give us the edge. Pretty good schedule for us this year as with all of our top competitors at home.
