Thank goodness for Cal's elite pitching and excellent defense. Jo Henderson was the first pitcher this season to shutout UCLA. The Bruins possess the top offense in the conference.
The Bear's hitting has really dropped off but it has for every team in Pac Nine play...Over the last three league weekends, Arizona, Oregon & now UCLA have slowed Cal's run production markedly especially in games 1 & 2 of the respective weekend series.
What's up with Britt Vonk? She was used as a pinch runner late today and had missed the previous six consecutive games. Cal could use her offense (OB%) at the top of the order. Jamia Reid & Breana Kostreba are really struggling to get hits. Actually the whole team is in a collective slump. Arizona pitchers tossed two & three hitters to open up in Berkeley. Oregon's Jessica Moore shutout Cal 1-0 last weekend. Today, UCLA's mediocore "ace", soph southpaw Jessica Hall, struckout eleven Bears in six innings, allowing only three hits and two earned runs. ASU crushed this same pitcher in the desert in back-to-back 9-1 blowouts. The Sun Devils scored 9 & 7 earned runs respectively against her in those mercy rule victories.
A clutch two-run single by Ashley Decker was the difference this afternoon.
GO BEARS!
