In Oregon's press release on its 2010-2011 schedule, there is the following note on the 2011 Pac-10 WBB tournament:

The Pac-10 Tournament takes place March 9-12 in Los Angeles and will begin at the Galen Center on the campus of USC before the semifinals and finals are played at the Staples Center.

The tournament will have a different seeding beginning this season:

Wednesday, March 9 (First Round, Galen Center)
Game 1: Seed #3 vs. Seed #10, 12 p.m. PT
Game 2: Seed #4 vs. Seed #9, 2:15 p.m. PT
Game 3: Seed #5 vs. Seed #8, 5 p.m. PT
Game 4: Seed #6 vs. Seed #7, 7:15 p.m. PT

Thursday, March 10 (Quarterfinals, Galen Center)
Game 5: Winner 3/10 vs. Winner 6/7, 3 p.m. PT
Game 6: Winner 5/8 vs. Winner 4/9, 5:15 p.m. PT

Friday, March 11 (Semifinals, Staples Center)
Game 7: Seed #1 vs. Game 6 winner, 12 p.m. PT
Game 8: Seed #2 vs. Game 5 winner, 2:30 p.m. PT

Saturday, March 12 (Championship, Staples Center)
Game 9: Championship Game, 11:30 a.m. PT
If this is accurate, I can't say that I like the revised format, as it is much too favorable for the second-place team (better to have a first night play-in for the 5 thru 10 seeds, then have the winners play the 2 thru 4 seeds to set up the semi-finals). In any case, there will now be a big incentive to finish in the top two.

With OSU's current roster of 7 players, it was inevitable that they would hold open tryouts. The first tryout was yesterday (technically not a formal tryout but a "prospect camp") and as reported by the Oregonian, one of the hopefuls was 47 year old Mary George.

It's not clear if George was interested simply in seeing how she would match up with the other prospects or if she would go so far as to enroll at OSU in order to try to make the team. But she does look serious (and very fit) in the photo.

I pray that she makes the roster and if she does, she's going to be an automatic pick for my all-freshman team.

Just watched MJ play hoops for essentially the first time tonight.

She did not look like a publicity gimmick out there. She had her first start, logged 24 mins, 14 points shooting 6-8, 6 rebs (3 o-boards), a steal and a block. Tulsa notched just their 6th win of the year and Marion was a major catalyst for it.

She is so explosive that during a steal and fast break sequence, I could feel my brain momentarily thinking "wait, is she about to dunk?"

However, she needs to improve her stamina, her shooting and ball handling if she wants to remain in the league next year. She is definitely more like a downhill skier than a giant slalom technician when dribbling the ball. But she does seem to have an impressive knack for finishing around the hoop.

She was interviewed at length during halftime and you can tell she has a burning desire to play in the league again next year. However, she was not definitive about her off season plans. She says there are overseas offers. But then she sort of ambiguously alluded to other opportunities at home.

Maybe she's trying to get back that 4th year of NCAA hoops eligibility that she forwent? lol

Incredibly, Michelle Smith leaves out the editorializing and backhanded compliments and just asks some straightforward questions in this interview with Joanne. Joanne responds with some good info, including:

Rachelle will be a team captain this year (great choice, the best you could make among the returners).

Joanne sounds very confident that all 4 freshmen will get immediate playing time, though Avigiel's debut may be delayed (her surgery is now described as ACL surgery, though there is no indication here or elsewhere that it was due to a one-time catastrophic trauma, so I don't think we're looking at a prolonged or never-ending rehab).

With respect to the next recruiting class (with Brittany Boyd already on board), Joanne says "we’ve got one scholarship left right now", indicating that the remaining available slots will be saved for future classes. I'm not sure we should take this literally but it can mean that numbers-wise this may be a small class.

Rama sounds healthy and ready to go!

Do I detect a slight Cal bias in the dramatic photo of Ashley that crowns the 26-40 rankings? But I don't think ASU should precede Cal. Nor do I agree that Rutgers deserves the #12 spot:
